Moderate Sleep Restriction and time-of-day impacts on simple social interactions

چکیده
Simple bargaining games are the foundation of more complex social interactions, and neuroscience research has shown that deliberative brain processes are necessary for socialdecision making. We study how commonly-experienced adverse sleep states, which can harm deliberative processes, impact outcomes in classic simple bargaining games. We experimentally manipulated and objectively measured sleep in 184 young-adult subjects: each was prescribed one week of sleep restriction and one week of well-rested sleep levels. The optimality of the time-of-day for decisions (early morning or late evening) was also randomly assigned across subjects. Increased sleepiness is estimated to significantly reduce altruism, trust, and trustworthiness. We conclude that commonly experienced adverse sleep states, in particular sleep restriction, reduce prosocial behaviors, and can limit benefits from short-term social interactions. 1Department of Economics & the CERPA (Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis), Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, USA. 2IZA (Institute for the Study of Labor), Bonn, Germany 3ESI (Economic Science Institute), Chapman University, Orange, CA, USA 4Department of Psychology, Florida Gulf Coast University, Ft. Time-of-day mediates the influences of extended wake and sleep restriction on simulated driving.
Although a nonlinear time-of-day and prior wake interaction on performance has been well documented, two recent studies have aimed to incorporate the influences of sleep restriction into this paradigm. Through the use of sleep-restricted forced desynchrony protocols, both studies reported a time-of-day × sleep restriction interaction, as well as a time-of-day × prior wake × sleep dose three-way...
متن کاملEffects of online social networks on sleep quality, depression rate, and academic performance of high school students
Introduction: Social Networks has entered teenagers' lives increasingly. Over 90% of teenagers use social networks during day and night. Evidences suggest that there's an increasing connection between social networks use and different aspects of teenager's health, including sleep quality and mental health. The aim of is this study is to do a survey effects of online social networks on sleep qua...
متن کاملInfluence of chronic moderate sleep restriction and exercise training on anxiety, spatial memory, and associated neurobiological measures in mice.
Sleep deprivation can have deleterious effects on cognitive function and mental health. Moderate exercise training has myriad beneficial effects on cognition and mental health. However, physiological and behavioral effects of chronic moderate sleep restriction and its interaction with common activities, such as moderate exercise training, have received little investigation. The aims of this stu...

متن کاملA one-hour sleep restriction impacts brain processing in young children across tasks: evidence from event-related potentials.
The effect of mild sleep restriction on cognitive functioning in young children is unclear, yet sleep loss may impact children's abilities to attend to tasks with high processing demands. In a preliminary investigation, six children (6.6-8.3 years of age) with normal sleep patterns performed three tasks: attention ("Oddball"), speech perception (consonant-vowel syllables), and executive functio...
